Greater than Zero: Toward the Total Economic Value of Alaska’s National Forest Wildlands  09/02/2008
This report examines existing economic data to reveal that the wildlands of Alaska’s Tongass and Chugach National Forests are worth as much as $2 billion annually. Using common economic concepts, methods and techniques the authors estimate the dollar value of social and ecological assets, including commercial salmon fishing, scientific use, recreation and subsistence. Concluding remarks suggest that the Forest Service should adopt a similar approach to valuing wildlands in future policy making and planning.

Fire and Fuels Restoration Priority System 07/31/2008
The Wilderness Society has developed a tool to help identify priority areas for forest and fire restoration efforts for use at the forest, district and watershed level. The tool uses geographic information system (GIS) supplied with Forest Service data layers to provide potential candidate stands for restoration across a given area or landscape and ranks them from low to high priority. The intent of this initial application of this system is to identify those forest stands that should be considered a priority for restoration of natural conditions in forests notably altered by previous stand management and decades of fire suppression.
