  • New Mexico Governor Richardson Calls for Wilderness Protection for Otero Mesa Grassland

  • On February 18, in his first official communication on the issue since taking office in January, Governor Richardson not only restated his opposition to drilling in Otero Mesa but also called for significant wilderness protections for the region.
     
  • Senators Hold Dedication of Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area

  • On February 17, Nevada's Senators Harry Reid (D) and John Ensign (R) were joined by the state's two congressmen, John Porter (R) and Jim Gibbons (R), American Indian tribal leaders, and BLM officials in a ceremony dedicating the newly created Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area.
     
  • Newspapers, Local Elected Officials Herald Reintroduction of Wild Sky Wilderness Bill

  • On February 13, Rep. Rick Larsen (D-WA) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) reintroduced the Wild Sky Wilderness Act to designate Wilderness in the Skykomish River Valley in Washington.
     
  • Dozens of Utah Wilderness Activists Hit Capitol Hill To Gain Support for Redrock Wilderness Bill

  • After participating in workshops and training sessions, activists hit Capitol Hill in an effort to gain co-sponsors for America's Redrock Wilderness Act.
