Wilderness Report #161
March 24, 2006

A bi-weekly update on the happenings in the Wilderness movement brought to you by the Wilderness Society's Wilderness Support Center.

In This Issue

  • County Demonstrates Support for Scotchman Peaks Wilderness Designation (Idaho-Montana)

  • Bonner County (Idaho) Commissioners are recommending that the Scotchman Peaks be designated as Wilderness.

  • Vermont Releases Forest Plan for Green Mountain National Forest

  • On March 22, 2006, the United States Forest Service released their final decision for the plan that will guide the management and protection of the Green Mountain National Forest in Vermont for the next 10 to 15 years. The plan calls for an additional 27,473 acres of proposed Wilderness. While this acreage is an increase from the draft plans proposed 17,000 acres of Wilderness, the Vermont Wilderness Association feels that the Wilderness proposed by the Forest Service is inadequate and they are urging their congressional delegation to introduce legislation that would more appropriately protect the wilderness quality lands in the forest.

  • Wilderness Ads Kick Off in West Virginia Newspapers

  • Local West Virginian Wilderness supporters are highlighted in a new print ad campaign sponsored by the West Virginia Wilderness Coalition and created by the Campaign for America’s Wilderness. The ads were designed to raise awareness about West Virginia’s beautiful, wild public lands and the diverse group of people who support protecting these lands.
