A bi-weekly update on the happenings in the Wilderness movement brought to you by the Wilderness Society's Wilderness Support Center. 40th Anniversary Wilderness Week Celebration A Huge Success!
On September 18-22, 2004, 300 activists from around the country representing more than 20 individual state wilderness campaigns came to Washington, DC to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act and lobby for future wilderness protections. Highlights of the week included a 40th Anniversary Gala dinner where Terry Tempest Williams directed the program and the audience was treated to speeches by Stewart Udall, Robert Redford, and Christopher Reeve (by video). The evening highlighted extraordinary places in the Wilderness system, the legendary leaders who have made Wilderness possible, and stressed the bipartisan history of our work. Awards were given to Mary Wimmer for her work in West Virginia, Polly Dyer for her lifetime of volunteer leadership in Washington State, Dr. Ed Wayburn, Sen. Robert Byrd and Rep. John Dingell.
The week was also highlighted by activists training sessions, “America Speaks for Wilderness,” a citizen’s hearing for wilderness at Freedom Plaza, a Wilderness Rally on Capitol Hill and a well-attended congressional reception. Thanks to all who participated and made the events possible!!
