President Bush’s budget for FY07, ignoring the recent defeat of similar proposals in Congress, is proposing to sell off nearly $1 billion worth of Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management lands to raise money for the federal treasury.

The Administration has set its sights on selling over 300,000 acres of Forest Service land in 41 states and possibly as many as 500,000 acres of Bureau of Land Management lands in the West.

The state hit hardest by the Forest Service proposal is California, where the Forest Service is considering selling more than 85,000 acres.

Forests in the Southeast (Region 8) could lose more than 55,000 acres to privitization.
