WILDALERT: Alaska's Teshekpuk Lake Needs Your Help (07/25/2006)
Over the strong objections of Native people, wildlife biologists, sportsmen's groups, and the general public, the Bureau of Land Management remains intent on leasing one of the most remarkable wetlands complexes on the planet. The place is the Teshekpuk Lake Special Area in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A), the largest single block of wild public land left in the United States.

WILDALERT: BLM Schedules Open Houses for Missouri Breaks Plan -- Please Attend (Montana only) (02/17/2006)
The BLM has extended the comment deadline for its draft plan for the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument in north-central Montana to April 26th.  Open houses have also been scheduled around Montana. Unfortunately, their draft plan  won't protect this magnificent place. It's clear the BLM needs to hear from you.

WILDALERT: Bush Budget Puts Our Public Lands on Blue-Light Special (02/15/2006)
As much as 800,000 acres of Americans' public land would be sold into private hands under one egregious provision of President Bush's proposed budget. Astonishingly, less than two months ago, bipartisan opposition in the Congress defeated a similar scheme. This absurd proposal deserves the same reaction from all of us. Please send that message to your Members of Congress!

WILDALERT: Help Us Stop Gale Norton's Last Public Lands Giveaway (03/22/2006)
In her final weeks at the Department of Interior, Secretary Gale Norton is spearheading an effort to streamline a policy to make it easier for states and counties to build highways on public lands. The end result of this last-minute maneuver could be the construction of thousands of miles of roads on some of our most unspoiled public lands.

WILDALERT: Interior Secretary Gale Norton Should Protect Otero Mesa (05/12/2005)
Under a plan finalized by the U.S. Department of Interior last January, 95% of wild Otero Mesa, in New Mexico, is open to oil and gas development. In an effort to stop this ill-conceived plan, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson has filed suit against Interior Secretary Gale Norton for failing to adequately protect Otero Mesa. Secretary Norton can put a stop to the leasing plan.

'Valley of Life' will be drilled to death if gas greed prevails.

WILDALERT: ORV Amusement Park Proposed Next to Sonoran National Monument (07/27/2006)
The Sonoran Desert National Monument is the heart of one of North America's largest and most diverse desert ecosystems. However, a private group has asked the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to hand over a square-mile of public lands practically adjacent to the Sonoran Monument so that the group can build an off-road vehicle theme park. Nothing could be more inappropriate. The resulting damage would irreversibly harm the Monument.

WILDALERT: Otero Mesa threatened by NM Land Commissioner decision--calls needed (07/14/2005)
Yesterday, New Mexico State Land Commissioner Patrick Lyons stomped on the voices of New Mexicans by siding with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in their plan to open 95% of Otero Mesa to irresponsible oil and gas development. Please tell Commissioner Lyons you think his decision to support full-scale development of Otero Mesa is not in the best interest for New Mexicans or our quality of life.

WILDALERT: Plan Threatens Arizona Monuments' Most Prized Resources (03/10/2006)
The Grand Canyon-Parashant and the Vermilion Cliffs were added to America's treasured roster of National Monuments so their exceptional values could be protected forever. The challenge for us is to ensure that the promise is fulfilled. How hard that might be is now evident in a draft management plan for the areas that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has released for public comment. It's a plan long on roads and motors, pitifully short on protection for priceless resources.

WILDALERT: Public lands sell off, help us spread the word (02/27/2006)
We need your help to keep a steady drumbeat of messages before Congress. This cartoon pretty much says it all. Will you please forward this to at least five friends, family, or coworkers urging them take action as well?

Fact Sheets & Analysis
“EPCA III” Fact Sheet (06/06/2008)
The Bureau of Land Management's “EPCA III” report paints a highly misleading portrait of the extent to which the development of federal onshore oil and gas resources are “inaccessible” to development. Despite the report’s implications to the contrary, most federal onshore oil and gas resources are available for leasing and drilling, and have been for a long time.

100 Years of Conservation, 100 Days of Public Lands Assault (04/21/2004)
America has been a global leader in the protection of wild places since the time of Theodore Roosevelt. Today, our 100-year legacy is at risk, with some of America’s most wild places threatened by overzealous oil and gas development and harmful logging. These are a few of the national treasures that have been under attack in the past 100 days.

14 Reasons for Congress to Invest in the National Landscape Conservation System (03/17/2004)
Conservation and historic preservation groups have identified almost $7 million in unfunded resource protection priorities in the spectacular National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS). These needs will go unmet unless Congress appropriates additional funds for the NLCS in FY2005.

Abuse of Trust -- A Brief History of the Bush Administration's Disastrous Oil and Gas Development Policies in the Rocky Mountain West (05/26/2004)
Although Federal law requires that the public lands be managed to protect a host of environmental values, as well as to provide opportunities for commercial exploitation of commodity resources, a series of administrative decisions beginning within the first months of the Bush Administration have made oil and gas development the dominant use of the public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management.

Administration Report Shows Most Federal Oil & Gas Already Available For Development in the Rocky Mountain West (09/24/2003)
Factsheet: Despite industry and Bush Administration claims that too much federal land in the Rocky Mountain West is unavailable for energy development, a report issued by the Bush Administration in January 2003 indicates that, in fact, most of the federal oil and gas resources in this region are currently available for leasing and development.

Administration's Record on Public Lands at Earth Day 2004 (04/21/2004)
Bush Administration policies are a significant and often radical departure from past approaches to stewardship. The move is away from balance and conservation for future generations and toward a short-term orientation that puts industrial development ahead of long-term conservation. Key examples of these changes are set out below.

Analysis of BLM Instruction Memorandum 2005-247 (10/07/2005)

Analysis of BLM’s Oil and Gas Development 2001-2007: Explosion of Drilling and Leasing Hits Rocky Mountain States Hardest (05/31/2008)
The last seven years have seen an unprecedented rush to lease and approve permits to drill on federal public lands. Despite the massive numbers of acres already under lease and available for drilling and the huge surplus of acres leased and Applications for Permits to Drill approved, industry, the Bush Administration, and BLM continue to insist they need access to millions of additional acres and push for opening more sensitive lands to development, particularly in the Rockies.

Analysis of Current Federal Actions Authorizing Drilling of New Wells (October 2007) (10/06/2006)
In October 2006, The Wilderness Society’s BLM Action Center conducted a preliminary analysis of land use plans and large-scale projects approved or in the process of approval in the states of Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming in order to estimate the number of new oil and gas wells likely to be approved for drilling over the next 15 to 20 years.

Analysis of Habitat Fragmentation from Oil and Gas Development and Its Impact on Wildlife: A Framework for Public Land Management Planning (05/28/2008)
This scoping brief is submitted as part of the NEPA process for this land management proposal. It is intended to identify habitat and wildlife impacts that must be analyzed in the plan, demonstrate the potential impacts on wildlife of habitat fragmentation from oil and gas development at various well-pad densities, and offer methodologies to assist the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to fulfill its responsibility to analyze the direct, indirect, and cumulative impacts on wildlife of proposed oil and gas development in the management plan.

Analysis of new Categorical Exclusion regulations (06/05/2003)
New regulations will allow very large logging operations with virtually no consideration of environmental impacts.

BLM’s Competitive Oil and Gas Leasing & Drilling Process (06/17/2008)
This fact sheet summarizes the process by which the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issues leases for oil and gas development and then permits drilling of those leases. The major steps in this process are set out and, for each step, an overview is provided of how the terms of a lease are affected and the opportunities for public participation and influence of oil and gas operations.

Bush Administration's Anti-Wilderness Assault Is Unprecedented (07/07/2003)
On April 11, 2003, Interior Secrtary Gale Norton entered into a settlement agreement with the State of Utah, prohibiting the BLM from ever again designating wilderness study areas on the tens of millions of acres of public lands it manages throughout the western states under Sections 201 and 202 of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act. This breathtakingly fallacious and unprecedented interpretation of the Interior Department's legal responsibilities to protect wilderness values on the public lands is at odds with all previous Republican and Democratic Administrations.
